“Votre attention s’il vous plait!” (Can I please get your attention?) I heard the loudspeaker of our building conveying…. “Apple Employees Evacuate! Go! Go! Go!” Confused from my blurry vision, I heard people screaming. I slightly opened my mouth to ask what the matter was, when I realized that fire was entering through my miniature gap of lips. It took me a while to clearly see what had happened… “A Bomb! Pablo! A bomb!” With his eyes widely open, one of my companions came running towards me as he shouted these words. Then he stopped abruptly near me waving his arms towards the escape route.
“Come on Pablo! Move! Why is it that you look at me as if I’m joking?!” I still could not believe that they had actually bombed us. I mean I understand that our phone company is better than theirs but why would they go this far?! “Pablo!!!!” I could hear the panic in his voice, but involuntary I ignored him, zooming into my mind trying to find the reason why Samsung’s company would attack us this early Monday.
“Pablo, bro, wake up!!” He grabbed my hand and started dragging me through the escape route he was pointing to a while ago allowing us to see through the shadowy gray smoke, a glimpse of light. “Don’t tell me you are thinking about the story of the man that passed next to a building and farted allowing the building to collapse. Ah! Hilarious I know!”
Yeah I know... His mood changed at a fast rate. Unbelievably true! His fear started to diminish as a contrary feeling hit me... I looked down at my feet as I felt some pain towards my right leg!
I still remember that day as clear as glass…
Months later I decided to quit my job because I felt as if I was in war. The two phone companies were always in competition between each other but I didn’t think it would go that far to unnecessary fights. That day I thought I was going to die! It frightened me that I would leave earth without saying good bye to my mother, my dear wife and my little five-year-old little girl.
“I will not tell you again Pablo! Go wherever you want to and when your time comes you will die where you’re meant to. Do not worry about it! I can understand that you are terrified after all the scary challenges you faced such as the tornado, the earthquake where we lost dear ones, the menacing turbulences of the plane going to France coming back from the U.S.” She sighed, looking at me as if she was disappointed that at 33-year-old she still had to lecture me about this. “OK mon fiston!(my son) Don’t forget that you are blessed whatever tough challenges you face, you will not face them alone! I can guarantee you such thing. God will be with you W-H-E-R-E-V-E-R you go! Capiche?” Still I could hear these words beeping in my sensitive ears.
Though I lost a leg from the bombing and a broken rib in the brutal earthquake, it did not stop me from going to amazing places with my beautiful little girl and wife! For her fourth birthday we’ve decided to go to Disney Land with the excitement contaminated by my daughter to go see the Disney Characters. “Daddy, we’re going to see Michey Mouche.” Still tumbling on her words as she speaks a little of both languages French and English which was an obligation due to our families combined with the different customs and languages. “Oh yes we are!” I answered.
When we got there, we got separated. My wife decided to go into our sophisticated reserved room to rest as she got tired from the early flight. So I went with my little girl after kissing my wife and wishing her to rest well and “Cyu later honey!”
She begged me to go on a roller-coaster with her. Now don’t panic people! I went on the rollercoaster yes! No I’m not crazy! Yes I didn’t want to disappointment my little girls. Of course the monitor in charge of the rollercoaster did not think I could go on it with a broken leg but after my arguments he gave up and let me.
My little girl seemed to understand the issue as when the monitor took the tickets in my hands and opened the little door to let us in.
The monitor helped lift my little girl to sit next to me and helped me settle in right next to her. I buckled her seat belt and all the excitement started to fill into us both! Hands the air waiting for the ride to depart…
“B-E-E-P!”
Yups… That noise is still ringing in my ears. It’s now that I remember that due to all the excitement I did not buckle my seat belt.
“DADDY!!!!” from my little girl’s voice was all I could hear as I was diving into the ground from the above as the roller-coaster turned.
Right now in heaven I still hear her crying my name waiting for me to come back and sit right next to her to finish that ride.
I look at her from above her tears and her happy birthdays, her tooth set under her pillow waiting on the tooth fairy.
I look at my wife from her grief for my absence and her dating a new man. Not blaming her for anything but just wishing to take my place back on this table of ours (us three).
My mother! Ah!
One thing, only one thing that she reminds me of and she reminded me off recently before my incident.
« Va ou tu veux et meurs ou tu dois ! »
Here, in my dead body, these words make me feel alive still ….
