I’ve been working in this house for about three years now and this subject was still not archaic enough.
“I just want us to start having a family Daisy; I don’t see why it’s so complicated for you not to understand me.”
Every night and day, Roger brings up the “Let’s have a baby” conversation when Daisy, his wife, always flips her long blond hair and shows no interesting into the subject. You would think that, since her reaction remained the same he would stop begging! No, No, his “Good Mornings!” and “Good Nights” to her were always the pleading about having a baby…
“Oh! Good Morning Honey. How’d you sleep last night?” Daisy said ignoring Roger’s petitioning.
Sometimes, I wonder! Is it that she is hiding a dark secret from her husband? Ah…Maybe she can’t have kids. Maybe she went to check with the gynecologist and found out that she is sterile! No no, let’s not think negative… This torments me! I would love to take care of little children running around the house, instead of cooking and cleaning or running Miss Daisy’s special errands. “Oh Dios Mios!” (Oh my Lord!) They have been married for four years now; I do not see the problem!
“I don’t understand what the problem is? What are you worried about my wife? Financial problems ? ‘Cuz if it is, don’t worry I get paid enough. You could quite your little daycare job for all I care and I will still manage to provide for the family…” Not paying attention to his scrambled ham and cheese eggs that I placed in front of him with his cup of coffee, Roger just kept on going on and on about the baby subject. But Daisy paid no attention to her husband’s speaking rather than admiring to her nails, hair, anything else…
“Trust me I will! It is really time for us to start a family Daisy; A boy, a girl, whichever God gives us: I just want kids. I impatiently waited four years, I love you Daise but…”
After taking a sip of her orange juice, Miss Daisy finally looks up as Mister Roger’s voice cracked as he said that last part. She looked surprised as she heard the emphasis on the “but”. As she started talking, Mister Roger’s head was fixed to his plate, bit by bit he ate his scrambled eggs.
“But what Roger? What? Suddenly having kids is more important than our four years of marriage? Is that it? Well maybe if you’d grow up a little bit more we could maybe consider it” She said furiously as she pushed the glass table on which they were having breakfast on, to stand up walking toward the sink.
“Let me take that Miss Daisy, don’t you worry I got it” I told her as I grabbed her unfinished fruit plate from her.
“Thank you Carla” she answered with a smile.
After dropping his fork and knife on his empty plate, Mister Roger stood up, furiously, he let his two crossed hands to hide his police badge, and then he started saying…
“I am tired of hearing you calling me the immature one! Why don’t you think that I am not mature enough to start a family? Have I not paid the bills on time? Have I not paid our credit cards as soon as you used them without advising me? I do everything Daisy. You are not being fair to me.” He paused, bending his back toward the table to add more sugar to his coffee. He realized that Daisy would stay there twisting the end of her hair with her pinky, he continued. “You know what, I won’t argue with you anymore. I won’t beg you anymore. You do not want to have kids yet then that’s what it’ll be. I will wait but…”
“But what Roger? You always have these “but-s”” Daisy exclaims, interrupting Mister Roger’s unfinished sentence.
“But…” picking up where he got cut off. “I will prove to you that I am not immature as you think I am.”
He drank his coffee in a single gulp, set down the cup gently on the table and turned around to thank me for the delicious breakfast before he went to his wife.
“Gracias por los deliciosos huevos Carla.” (Thank you for the delicious eggs) He told me with a smile, showing his satisfaction of his breakfast.
“I hope that you are not hiding anything from me Daisy, but if having kids now is really you do not want, then your husband that loves you so much will respect your decision and try to be patient until you are comfortable with the idea.” With his eyes locked in hers, he pulls her in his arms to hug her. “Have a good day Daisy, I’ll be thinking about you…Like always.” Before he leaves, he plants a gentle kiss on her forehead and grabbed his police hat…
“Ah… Handsome Mister Roger! I can’t wait to see your beautiful children; I am on your side my son.” Not realizing I said that out loud, Miss Daisy approached me saying…
“What was that Carla?” then we both relieved the awkwardness by laughing it out. “I will prove to her that I can be a good father… in fact the best father any kid on this planet could have.” He pounded his chess hard and placed his right hand back on the wheel of his black police car. Roger was on duty for the whole day in a familiar private neighborhood. That place always reminded him of that one day when he babysat his friends’ son, an enthusiastic little five-year-old boy named Jamie. His mom often leaves him with his grandma, traveling to visit her husband in rehab. Too young to understand this shocking situation, Jamie has never been told the exact truth about his dad. He was simply told that his dad is working with a “superhero far away” which was enough to satisfy him whenever he missed him.
“Hello Jamie, how are you today” He stopped the car while shouting to the boy sitting on grass playing car race across the road.
“Officer Roger!!” Jamie happily yelled as he quickly stood up and ran to Roger in excitement as he obviously recognized him.
“Hey Buddy, how are you?”
“I’m good thanks” answered Jamie still holding on to his cars.
“Enjoying the summer?”
He shook his head left to right as he said “No, I’m alone, my friends left.”
Roger quickly had a brilliant idea. He digs through his pockets to find his black Nokia and dials a number while Jamie impatiently stood there staring at him with a big grin on his face.
“Oww really! What do you say if we go to an adventure today, just you and me?!” He says as after he hangs ending his five minute call with his department announcing of his “off duty” for the day.
“Really! Like Father and Son!” Jamie started jumping of excitement.
“Sure buddy, like father and son” He forced him a smile as he heard Jamie saying that to him. At the same time he was glad to be called father but wished that he could actually be one. “Maybe today is the day, I can finally be a father” Roger quietly thought.
“Bye Grandma I will be back soon” Jamie giggled as his Grandma had gone inside to grab him a juice box he demanded earlier, before Roger’s arrival. As Roger’s eyes stared at the white clouds thanking God for giving him the chance to be a father for a day, he forgot the fact that he had to let the Grandma know about Jamie’s absence.
5 hours later…
“Excuse me, Miss Daisy?” I approached her as she sat on the balcony putting on a nail polish she had chosen from her Essie collection.
“Yes Clara, how may I help you?” she answered vaguely.
“I do not know if you’d mind me asking…but… I … just wanted to know if you are having trouble having kids” I hesitated; I feared her reaction for I knew it was none of my business.
“Oh Clara!”
“You are right. Who am I to ask? Sorry Miss Daisy this is none of my business…” I exclaimed as I started to walk away not letting her finish her sentence.
“Are you going all Mister Roger on me now?” She let out a stressful laugh as leaned forward to paint her toes.
I turned around, sat down and gently took her feet up to my knees to paint her toe nails with the vivid color she chose.
“Well Clara, I’m glad that you asked actually. I’ve wanted to talk to someone about my true feelings about the baby situation…” She paused trying to find my eyes to make eye contact, but I purposely kept my head down hoping that she’d keep on going on…
“I fear that once we have kids I will no longer get the love that I am getting now from my husband today… You know what I mean?”
“Oh… Miss, don’t worry about that, Mister Roger loves you and will always love you the same way.” I did not tell her what she wanted to hear but what was true. I have never seen a husband love his wife that much. But as I stared at her worried face I knew something else was up and that something will be revealed soon, I can guarantee you! I feel it! “The rides were awesome! Thanks Officer Roger. You the best Dad I could have wished for!” As he jumped to hug Roger, Jamie thanked him for the amazing time he had at the park where they spent their entire day. “Can we go get some ice cream before we go home please?”
“Sure Buddy let’s go!” Roger told him caressing his head. “Awesome! Grandma would think that it’s too late. She would mention something about cavaties but I never pay attention to what she says about my teeth because they are always white. Look!” He said as he opened his mouth widely making a grimace with his cute face. “Clara, would you please turn on the television to check at what time our favorite show is put in today’s program.” As I turned the Tv on, the captions on the news channel was “A five year old boy has been missing the whole day…”
“Poor little boy I hope he is safe wherever he is.”
“What is Clara?” I heard her footsteps approaching and she yelled out. “Jamie!” She yelled as they passed a slide show of pictures showing the missing little boy. “I know him! This year was his last year in the daycare I work in, I love that kid. I should call Roger and see if he is still on duty, maybe he could look for him...And I think he babysat him once for Ginger, Jamie’s mom remember? Robbie’s wife. The one in rehab! Clara are you even listening!” She started talking crazily as she quickly ran to get her phone and dialed her husband’s number reaching the voice mail every time. “His poor Grandma, she must be worried. Especially if she’s the one guarding him today as Ginger is most likely absent.” She sighed. “Clara close all the doors we’re going to see Jamie’s Grandma for support.”
As we arrived to the Grandma’s porch, she quickly opens the door as if she knew Miss Daisy would come. She threw herself at Miss Daisy and started crying.
“I know I’ve been annoying to him sometimes…” the Grandma started to sob. “But that’s only because I love him I don’t see why he’d run away. He is only five! Am I that bad of a guardian?”
“No no, don’t worry he will be back soon I feel it” Miss Daisy said to console her.
As soon as Miss Daisy finished her sentence, the noise of two car doors closing broke the sobbing into chock. Jamie ran to his Grandma and said…
“Grandma, I had the best day of my life, Officer Roger and I did the cool things, we went to the…”
Miss Daisy became puzzled. Impossible to look behind her as she was meticulously hearing Jamie’s footsteps approaching singing joyfully of this amazing day he had. “With who? With who! With Officer Roger… Roger? Roger my husband? I could not believe this.” I heard her placid whisperers as she tried not to interrupt Jamie’s good aura of telling his story. Though this shocking moment seemed to debilitate her she still had the courage to turn and face Mister Roger and give him a piece of her mind!
“Are you serious Roger?!” Interrupting Jamie’s excitement while he continued to explain how amazing his day was as she let out her frustration on her husband.
“I am sorry Madame for taking your grandson away without advising you” Roger ignoring Daisy’s comment looked straight into the Grandma’s eyes to apologize.
“Grandma, I knew Mister Roger would not be a problem since Mommie Ginger knows him and I’m sure Dad would give him part of his powers for being a dad to me for another day. Don’t you think GrandGrand! Let’s not punish him! I’ll eat my beans so don’t put him on time out.” Jamie out of breath, deliberated quickly as he looked at his grandma trying to persuade him with a placid and innocent and forgiving look in addition to his words.
“Oh my son! Thank you for bringing him safely to me, may God bless you.” The Grandma answered still crying though less, as she closed the door behind her and Jamie.
“Grandma! Officer Roger, can he be my dad one day?” Jamie said so loudly that even though the entrance door was closed Miss Daisy, Mister Roger and I heard the boy’s question. The door quickly reopened freeing Jamie running to hug Mister Roger to thank him one last time also hearing the Grandma yelling in worry in the background… “Jamie!!!”
“Don’t worry Grandma I’m not leaving this time” he said as he closed the door.
“Well... Miss Daisy since your husband is here, I’ll drive the other car home and you can ride with him” I said breaking the awkward silence as the couple stood in front of the door.
On the road back home Roger and Daisy did not discuss much from what Miss Daisy explained to me when she returned home. At first “I felt so ridiculous, childish, immature and was mad that he acted so irresponsible” was what she started to say to me. “…usually I’m the irresponsible one, and the selfish one which is why I found it easy blaming everything on him, you know!” Still waiting for her to get to the best part, I sat, allowing my right fist to support my head as I leaned forward feeling that the good part was almost out… “Oh! Clara it’s because of me today he acted as stupid as I’ve been acting: holding in a secret that he deserves to know! But I don’t know I am still not ready for it to be true! But I guess its happening.” She still did get to the interesting part but knowing her, and since I’ve been doing that for three years now I just jumped the broom and asked the question. “How did you tell him Miss Daisy?” She smiles at me and told me how it went as she re-winded the whole scene in her head filling me into all the details and images!
“The thing is I’m scared Roger!” I said placing both of my hands on my wet face as tears were cascading down mixing into my tan powder on my soft cheeks.
“Scared of what Daise? Talk to me!” He said as he slowly pulled the car over. He wiped away some my tears falling down my puffy cheeks and gently turned my chin towards him. At this moment Clara I felt like I could not hold it in anymore I had to deliberate!
“I’m…” I started saying and cried more.
“Come on Miss Daisy get to the point!” I cut her image as I was impatient to know the ending.
She laughed and continued.
“Okay! Okay! He then says and you know of course with his attractive voice ‘Come one Daise, just tell me what it is, it won’t change anything. And then I said it!”
And that one night Miss Daisy finally revealed the true dilemma. As their maid I suffered three years with Roger’s deep sorrow of not being able to convince his wife to have a baby! So proud of Miss Daisy’s last words, I kept on hearing it again…
“Roger, we’re having a baby…”
…and again!
