“Who would have thought that one day I would marry him…” I questioned myself. “Who knew? Who knew that one day I would wake up and be his wife? He, who made my middle school years a nightmare which I will never forget. Unbelievable that an eye contact after years sparkled love between us…”
It all began…
10 Years earlier…
As I stretched myself off to bed, my yawning stopped remembering that I would need to take a taxi to attend to school.
“Ugh! Taking a taxi would mean: getting a ride with other people, and I do not want to socialize this morning.” I said rolling my eyes with exasperation.
I rushed through my clothes still stretched across the kitchen, allowing my frustration to shake up the knives, forks, and spoons as I opened and closed their drawers brutally. The time on the clock above the stove caught my eyes: “No time for breakfast” I thought and grabbed my bags with my left hand and went on to the elevator.
I walked to the entrance door of the building and pushed it open, allowing my feet to shift left to right to step into the outside cold. It was almost fully dark. The lights coming on nearby houses as people woke up to settle in for their day.
While I waited for a taxi to slow down, I walked to the coffee shop next door that called me with a strong, sweet smelling aroma of its coffee. After I devoured my order, an old man addressed me, sitting in a yellow vehicle. Raising my eyebrows, confused as of why he would be talking to me but then I realized “Ah a taxi driver …” I stepped into the car and for some reason, my stomach clenched making me wonder if I’m about to make a mistake.
I watched him pulling down his window, I heard him murmuring words as he made gestures from inside to a man outside.
“You’re coming in today or not?” He said to the man, mocking him for he always made him wait.
“Ah… very funny buddy” the man responded “Un…”
“I know this voice” I thought in my silent mode.
“…lock the doors!” the man said contented.
“Wait” I yelled out panicking as a recognized this cruel and selfish creature from my old days.
The old man turned and looked at me with a puzzled look, as he slowly unlocked the doors inviting the man to enter.
“Come on, not today I’m in a hurry!” the man said impatiently.
He flipped his hair as he sat next to me. I crossed my fingers as my fear of him recognizing me became more effusive. While the taxi driver and he were loquaciously weirdly conversing about their night, sweat was dripping down under my aged blue coat.
“Hey, it’s Cass!” Practicing my words, unsure if I should talk to him or not?
“Remember me? Ugly Cassie was what you and your jerk friends referred to me as…” Remembering the superfluous mean things they’ve said or done to me. I bit my nails, freeing the tension in my nervous system.
“Um… Excuse me Miss where do I drop you exactly?” I heard the taxi driver’s voice fading into the love songs on the radio.
Still with my head facing his fancy looking shoes at the corner of my eyes, I ignored the old man’s question. I wanted to stay vigilant: afraid that if I spoke he would recognize the intimidated voice I still kept. Until my eyes caught something interesting- I could see the definition of his biceps… Then I thought maybe, just maybe I had always had a minor or major crush on him. So selfish of me not think about my feelings!
“Cassie he was right maybe you are ugly, you are ugly on the inside, and you are selfishly ugly…” I paused, since I realized I was no longer searching through my thoughts but instead I was screaming them out loud for the world to hear! So surprised of what just happened I quickly raised my head up, accidently hitting it on the back window …
“That will cost you twenty bucks extra” jokingly said the taxi driver.
Ignoring his joke… eye to eye, there he was, looking at me. I felt like opening the door and escape, but my hands were glued on my face hiding part of my humiliation.
“Ugly Cassie? Is that you” I could hear his voice addressing me.
I refused to look…Until his manly hands gently pulled up my chin to reassure him that it was really me by looking at me in the eyes.
“Aww Redeeming Love! Isn’t it George” said the driver while he put up the volume of the current love song that was now playing.
Well let me tell you that the driver was not joking. He was indeed right!
“Happy Valentine’s Day Cass Honey” he happily chanted as he interrupted my dream, allowing the sun’s rays to trespass through the windows. Waking me up with his attractive perfume along with the sweet smelling aroma of a delicious breakfast, my eyes suddenly widen and gave him a soft kiss on his lips.
“What was that for?” he said with a grin on his face as if the kiss puzzled him. “Did you dream about the Valentine’s Day that we spent with Benjie the old taxi driver?” he continued as he stood there with a smirk smile on his face.
“As if you knew” I answered him before I tasted the delicious eggs lying on a plate surrounded with roses.
“Cass!” just like that moment in the taxi, he gently pulled up my chin trying to find my hazzled eyes to say “I will always love you! You never deserved a jerk like me but, your beauty and your heart helped me change that to almost give you what you deserve. I am still working on it but I can assure you that I have ten more years.”
“George” as I glued my hands on his cheeks, “today is going to be the greatest day of our life, you will stand at the altar and don’t you worry! I will not run away…”
